Cannabis in Thailand
Despite having been illegal for decades, cannabis is now legal in Thailand as of June 9, 2022. And while this may come as a surprise to some, the recent legislative change is part of a larger trend towards decriminalizing cannabis use across the world. In addition to Thailand, countries such as Canada, Uruguay and several US states have legalized marijuana in recent years.
Of course, just because smoking weed is now legal in Thailand doesn't mean some restrictions aren't still in place. For example, it is important to note that smoking in public places is still illegal and can result in a THB 25,000 fine or up to three years in prison. So if you plan on treating yourself, make sure you do it in a private setting. Furthermore, driving under the influence of cannabis is also illegal and could result in serious penalties.
That said, the recent legalization of cannabis in Thailand is cause for celebration for many people. It offers a new opportunity for recreation and relaxation and could boost the country's economy by creating new jobs and generating tax revenues.
